Here's some testing.

 

Probing the zero cross on the scope to see if we are detecting it OK.

Looks like the zero cross is being detected just fine:

Probing the AC wave at varios delays on the triac:

Now with a 2W (blue) resistor replacing the previous one that was getting HOT!  See a previous picture of the board where that resistor was getting a bit brown :)

No Delay (full power, bright light):

Slight delay:

More delay:

More Delay (about half brightness)

Large delay (not much power, dim light)
